All About 220 Rathnally!

My name's Andrew and I'm working on my PhD at Western. Here's my personal page in the department. I'd probably prefer graduate or professional students, but I'm really just looking for considerate people, so it won't hurt to contact me either way.

About the Location

The house is on a quiet street just off Oxford (a major street) and the neighbours are a mixture of families and elderly people, plus a few other student houses on nearby streets. Address: 220 Rathnally St, London, ON

It's about a two minute walk to the nearest bus stop (see the map). Here are some typical travel times to the Natural Sciences building on campus:

  • BUS: 9-11 minutes once you catch it (buses come every 5 minutes during peak hours)
  • WALK: about 25 minutes at a leisurely pace.
  • BIKE: 7 minutes if you ride hard (like me), 12 otherwise.
  • DRIVE: 6-8 minutes (to parking) + 5 minutes of walking.
  • The bus-stop intersection (Western Rd & Oxford) has McDonalds, Mr.Sub, a pizza place, a convenience store, and about four small restaurants nearby. There's a mall with a 24-hour A&P just East of the house, but when you're carrying lots of groceries it's a bit too far to walk I think -- best to drive or take a bus.

Incase you've never been to London, the downtown area is near Victoria Park (on the map), but a more popular shopping area is probably the one that's a 5 minute drive north of the campus.

    About the Rooms

The house is a 1.5 story home with a mostly finished basement. There are two available rooms upstairs, and one available on the lower level (read: basement). I only want three or four people in the house at a time (including myself), so I might leave one of the rooms empty. No smokers, please!

Fall/Winter Rent: $300/m (12 month lease, includes utilities)
Fall/Winter Rent: $330/m (8 month lease, includes utilities)

I have a few spare furnishings (desk, bed, dresser, chairs), but I can't guarantee that I'll have what you want.

"Utilities included" means you do NOT have to pay for any of these:

  • The 3Mb DSL internet connection that goes throughout the house
  • Gas, water, or electricity
  • Cable (Basic)
  • Phone line

But I'll obviously ask that you pay for any long-distance phone charges. Up to two separate phone lines can be configured to go anywhere in the house.

If enough people want more than basic cable, then I might be willing to order other packages as well -- we'll have to talk about it.

  • About the House

I try to keep the house clean!

The interior of the house was heavily renovated in the summer of 2004, so that includes new floors everywhere, a new shower/surround and some rooms are newly painted (kitchen, living room, bathrooms)

The house itself doesn't have air conditioning, but there's a relatively powerful window AC unit that seems to do the trick.

    Living Room

    Kitchen
Wall-to-wall the kitchen is 10'x9'2" (3.0x2.8 metre), and there are two counter tops on either side of the room (lots of counter space). There is a double sink, large fridge, small fridge, electric oven, microwave, but unfortunately no dishwasher at the moment (sigh). Lots of cupboards; two stools as well.

    Bathroom
There are two bathrooms. The bathroom on the main floor would be shared by myself and anyone who moves in upstairs. The shower/bathtub and the vanity/sink are both brand new as of Fall 2004, so everything's nice.

Yes, the shower-window is frosted so the neighbours can't spy! Still, a bad idea...

There is a second 3 piece bathroom on the lower level, for anyone living downstairs.

    Back Yard
The back yard has a picnic table and a small fire pit (fires are apparently permitted). There is now a large 8'x8' shed that can hold four bikes with lots of room to maneuver. There's a gas BBQ now too (yessss!).

    Laundry
There's both a washer and a dryer on the lower level.

    Parking
The drive way is a single lane that can hold three cars. I personally don't use my car every day, so I don't mind having one other car in the drive way but three cars would be annoying, wouldn't you agree?

    About Me

I'm 27, graduated from Waterloo Co-op Computer Science in 2003, in Fall 2004 I started a Masters at UWO and in Fall 2006 I started my PhD. I won't be holding any crazy who-are-these-people house parties here, nor would I want a tenant to, but having friends over is no problem at all.

You can contact me via adelong3 at csd.uwo.ca or (519) 433-6464. I'd be happy to give a quick tour if you're in town some weekend. Good luck, and happy hunting...
