The Durham Region Branch is part of the Ontario Genealogical Society (a.k.a. Ontario Ancestors). Our branch started in 1982 and currently has may members. We are located in Eastern part of the Greater Toronto Area, just an hour east of Toronto. Our branch takes in the following eight municipalities: City of Pickering, Town of Ajax, Town of Whitby, City of Oshawa, Municipality of Clarington, Town of Scugog, Town of Uxbridge, Town of Brock.
Our coverage includes the historic areas of:- Thorah, Brock, Scott, Uxbridge, Reach, Scugog, Cartwright, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Darlington, Newcastle, Clarke.
Our branch goal is to encourage, bring together and assist those interested in the pursuit of genealogy and family history in the Durham Region. Our members focus on preserving information that will be useful for anyone doing research on ancestors from the Durham Region. We also provide a sound base for researchers, living here, who have ancestors in other areas around the world.
Our members have an interest in genealogy and enjoy meeting with other like-minded people. Our executive is made of up volunteers, as are all the teams working on various branch projects.
The OGS is a registered charity and issues Canadian income tax receipts for donations, including those received by Branches. We also welcome donations of family histories, books, maps and other genealogical items.
[Canada Helps provides donation receipts for income tax purposes.]
Joining the Durham Branch of the OGS is a good way to expand the scope of your genealogical research, as well as to meet people with similar interests.

HISTORY OF THE DURHAM REGION BRANCH, O.G.S. [submitted by Janis Carter]
An initial meeting of interested genealogists took place at the Whitby Library, March 2, 1982.
The meeting was instigated by Dale and Gil McIntosh and Stephen and Lori Wood, by placing a
small ad in the paper. Forty-three people attended and thirty-one became paid members that
evening. It was decided to form a group and to approach OGS about becoming a branch. The
name Whitby-Oshawa was selected for the group, membership fees were set at $4.00 and
meetings would be held at the Whitby Library the first Tuesday of every month. An executive
was voted in, consisting of Gil McIntosh – Chairman, Stephen Wood – Chair, Dale McIntosh –
Secretary, and Lori Wood – Treasurer. [More...]
