OGSPI Report – End of Project http://www.ogs.on.ca/ogspi/welcome.htm 2007 February 15 Kellie M Love rmlove@sympatico.ca FINIS!!! Our OGSPI 1891 Census Transcription Project is finally complete! In 2001, Durham Region OGS Branch became an active contributor to the Ontario Genealogical Society Provincial Index Project (OGSPI), committed to transcribing the 1891 census of Durham and Ontario Counties; and also parts of Muskoka and York Region due to electoral boundaries. We’ve come a long way since the first hardcopies were distributed in the fall of 2001. It did take longer than anticipated, but the results are very impressive. The thirty-eight areas assigned to us constituted 3,593 pages. At twenty-five lines per page, that equates to 89,825 lines, however taking into consideration the number of blank lines throughout, and on the last page of each division, my estimation of the number of lines recorded is approximately 89,000. Sincere thanks are extended to the many volunteers for their diligence and enthusiasm in making census records available online. Nineteen people transcribed the thirty-eight areas assigned to us (those marked with an asterisk recorded more than one town/township).
Linda Carder, June James, Don Parkes, Alvina Seawright and Ruth Waite each completed numerous townships. Victoria Fraser and Ruth transcribed census other than 1891 – anyone having families in Clarke, Pickering or Uxbridge Townships can research several years of census; Lee Craig transcribed 1851 Reach and Brock Townships. Bea Hale, Don Parkes and myself also transcribed for other counties; Hardcopies are retained in the branch office at the airport; see Durham Region OGS home page for hours of operation. Again, thank you, volunteers! Great Job! The OGSPI website is constantly being updated, so visit often - http://www.ogs.on.ca/ogspi/welcome.htm. And contact OGSPI team leaders John and Lynda Allan if any entry should be updated or changed. Anyone wishing to transcribe a particular area, please contact John and Lynda Allan. |
